Photo credit: Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian/Facebook KUCHING, Feb 29: Phase 3 of the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park is open to the public today after Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the implementing agency, completed its final inspection with the contractor, announced Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim, who is the Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, stated that Phase 3 is primarily intended for teenagers and includes five game facilities: pétanque (lawn bowling), pickleball, skateboarding, basketball, and table tennis. Phase 3 is located between Phase 1 which is the Batu Kawa ‘Sky Window’ and Phase 4 which is the children’s playground. “At the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, there is something for everyone in the family, irrespective of age (from children to senior citizens). “Phase 1 includes the Batu Kawa ‘Sky Window’ with eight stories of stairs to climb. Phase 2 offers walks for senior citizens, Phase 3 provides five games facilities for teenagers, and Phase 4 features a children’s playground,” Dr Sim stated in a post on his official Facebook page today. He said that the remaining projects to be completed are the glass bridge connecting Phase 4 (children’s playground) to Kampung Rantau Panjang, which is awaiting an open tender, and Phase 2 comprising Kampung Rantau Panjang riverbank protection. Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman continued: “Thanks to the successful contractors (via open tender) of the various phases and implementing agencies MPP and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, with funding from Sarawak and federal government agencies, different phases have been completed since 2018 despite Covid-19. “Please enjoy, but don’t forget to help to look after the facilities. Please do visit the waterfronts of Kampung Rantau Panjang and Kampung Sinar Budi Lama (opposite side of the river).” — DayakDaily

Dr Sim hands over a cap and apron to a stall operator at the bazaar. – Photo by Kong Jun Liong KUCHING (March 12): The local councils are working together with the state Health Department to monitor cleanliness and hygiene at Ramadan bazaars in the state, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, also called on members of the public to play their part and report Ramadan bazaars stalls that fail to practise good hygiene. “Food safety is always very important, and thus the Sarawak Health Department is working together with public health inspectors of local councils to ensure food quality is maintained and prevent food poisoning. “Stall operators who maintain proper food hygiene will attract more customers; if not, word about the lack of hygiene will spread around,” he told reporters during a walkabout at Emart Batu Kawa’s Ramadan Bazaar, here yesterday. Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, said Ramadan bazaars in Sarawak are the best examples of racial and religious harmony. “The beautiful part of the bazaar is finding food that are normally unavailable other than during Ramadan, along with seeing people of all races joining,” he said. Meanwhile, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, who was also present, said the council has assigned 24 personnel from its public health unit to monitor cleanliness at Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.
