Yap (centre) witnesses the symbolic handing over of the recreational park at Semaba Park, Lorong 7 at Jalan Semaba by G-Wan Trading Company’s Abang Yusuf (second right) to MPP works superintendent Hartini Ahmad. KUCHING, March 8: Upgrading works for two recreational parks costing RM150,000 by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) under Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap’s rural transformation project (RTP) has been completed. In a statement today, Yap said the combined sum of RM150,000 was for upgrading works for the recreational parks at Lorong 7, Semaba Park, costing RM100,000 and at Lorong Jalan Semaba 2B2 amounting to RM50,000. “The upgrading works for both projects were completed on schedule,” he said upon witnessing the handover by the contractor to MPP on the project site. Yap thanked MPP for monitoring and supervising the upgrading works to ensure that they were completed on schedule and with quality finishing. He hoped that the completed upgrading of the two recreational parks would provide a more conducive venue for the residents to congregate and organise social activities. Yap encouraged active recreation opportunities for all ages and contributed towards improving the quality of life for the local communities as well as improving property values for the area. He hoped that the residents living near the two upgraded parks would also play their role and take an active part in maintaining them in the same way they care for their personal belongings and abide by all rules and regulations made by MPP. Yap said he is committed to doing his part to secure more development funds from the State government and hoped Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen would follow suit in applying for more development funding from the federal government. The contractors for the two projects were G-Wan Trading Company and Khamlza Sejati Enterprise. — DayakDaily

Dr Sim, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, also called on members of the public to play their part and report Ramadan bazaars stalls that fail to practise good hygiene. “Food safety is always very important, and thus the Sarawak Health Department is working together with public health inspectors of local councils to ensure food quality is maintained and prevent food poisoning. “Stall operators who maintain proper food hygiene will attract more customers; if not, word about the lack of hygiene will spread around,” he told reporters during a walkabout at Emart Batu Kawa’s Ramadan Bazaar, here yesterday. Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, said Ramadan bazaars in Sarawak are the best examples of racial and religious harmony. “The beautiful part of the bazaar is finding food that are normally unavailable other than during Ramadan, along with seeing people of all races joining,” he said. Meanwhile, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, who was also present, said the council has assigned 24 personnel from its public health unit to monitor cleanliness at Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.

Penguang (fourth left) joins others in holding together the ‘prosperity gift’ received from the lion dancers during the Chinese New Year 2024 event at the MPP headquarters. KUCHING (March 4): There is an urgent need to incorporate a holistic approach in dealing with flash floods, acknowledging climate change as among the contributors. Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Dr Penguang said he had talked about and replied to questions regarding this matter in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sittings. “Clogged or inadequately-sized drains, and improper planning, may contribute to flash floods, but do not forget that climate change is also equally responsible,” he said in his speech at the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP)’s Chinese New Year 2024 event today, where he represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Penguang also spoke about how climate change had led to unprecedented rainfall patterns, causing floods in regions where they were previously uncommon. “If you could recall, years ago we seldom had rain every day, like what’s happening over these past few weeks. “Nowadays it happens everywhere and flash floods strike, not only in Sarawak and other parts of Malaysia, but in places where flooding never occurred before across Africa, Europe and the Americas.” Having said this, Penguang also called for solid collective action from the local authorities and the communities to address these issues more effectively, covering key aspects such as waste management, drainage maintenance and flood mitigation measures. “I believe there is much more that we can accomplish as a united team, which include the councillors and staff members of the local authorities.” Adding on, Penguang also called upon the local authorities to raise their working standards, going beyond mere compliance with the laws and regulations and always striving for continuous improvements in meeting the evolving public expectations. “Always take note of the public feedback, which is now more accessible via social media. “I recommend that we redouble our efforts. While you have already put in considerable work, it may not suffice to meet public expectations. “Therefore, it is imperative to intensify our focus on addressing common issues such as waste management, clogged drains and flash floods,” he added. Also present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, MPP chairman Tan Kai, and Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim.
