KUCHING: Any business outlets such as convenience stores or coffee shops involved in illegal activities such as gambling will have their trading licences withdrawn.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said this when commenting on illegal gambling in business premises throughout Sarawak after the State Commissioner of Police Datuk Ramli Din said his officers wanted to speak to the councils on the matter.

Ramli has said that among the main police targets this year were illegal gambling outlets throughout the state.

“I have heard stories that there are some such outlets in Padawan, but I have to verify whether it is true,” Lo said to reporters during his Chinese New Year open house at Jalan Stapok last Saturday.

He, who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman, went on to say that some outlets had been disguising their online gambling activities by selling stationery or tid-bits.

“When the police have confirmed the illegal activities, then the council will take away their licences. We (MPP) will give full cooperation to the police,” he assured.

Also present at the open house were Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar James Jemut Masing and Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
