KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation before deciding whether or not it would suspend any of its upcoming events.

In stating this, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng  assured that the council would adhere strictly to the guidelines and instructions given by the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN).

“We will monitor the situation. The people’s health is always the priority of MBKS.

“We would also like to appeal to the public to cooperate with us and the government so that together, we can fight the virus,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

One of MBKS’ upcoming events is the Ramadan Bazaar, set to be taking place at Stutong Commercial Centre and Stutong Community Market carpark from April 24 to May 23.

According to Wee, MBKS has stopped accepting new applications for trading lots at the annual Ramadan bazaar, though he does not have the latest figure as to how many traders have applied for them.

Meanwhile, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said there was a possibility that the Ramadan Bazaar programme, organised and run by the council every year, would be cancelled this year.

“We will be having our meeting soon. We may have to cancel it (Ramadan Bazaar) – (we’ll) see how our meeting goes,” he said in a WhatsApp message.

Sarawak, which recorded its first positive Covid-19 case on Friday, has registered 20 positive cases as of yesterday.
