KUCHING (Dec 1): Tree planting is not only an act of environmental preservation for a healthier community but also a vital investment in a sustainable future, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, Tan Kai. He emphasised that plants are crucial for improving air quality and are key elements in the global fight against climate change. “What we sow today will augur well for generations to come,” he said during a tree-planting campaign held at Jalan Arang, Saturday. He explained that the event was part of MPP’s ongoing initiatives to foster a greener, healthier, and more livable environment for the community. Tan also expressed his delight at the involvement of members from the Padawan Child Council, noting that their participation is essential for raising public awareness about environmental conservation. “The active participation of our youth in green activities ensures sustainable development and encourages more individuals to fulfill their social responsibilities,” he said. Tan further highlighted that community involvement is the key to success of all environmental preservation policies. In line with the state’s sustainable development agenda, he called on everyone to continue supporting such initiatives in the future.

KUCHING (Nov 5): The Sarawak government has established the Sarawak Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Committee as a strategic mechanism to strengthen the implementation of the United Nations SDG in the state, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said the move underscores Sarawak’s commitment to integrating SDG principles into its development policies and programmes to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth across all sectors. Awang Tengah noted that the initiative aligns with the global development agenda and is also embedded in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. “PCDS 2030 envisions Sarawak as a developed state by 2030, anchored on three main pillars ― economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability,” he said in a statement following the National SDG Meeting in Putrajaya recently. The meeting served as a high-level platform to review Malaysia’s progress in integrating SDG into national and state development frameworks. It was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who called for stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to accelerate the nation’s sustainable development agenda by 2030. Awang Tengah said the Sarawak SDG Committee consists of a Steering Committee, a Technical Committee, and seven Working Groups focusing on key thematic areas: economic growth; inclusivity and well-being; sustainable financing; education, innovation and human capital; environment and natural resources; SDG localisation and urban development; and SDG local action and community resilience. He added that the Sarawak SDG Roadmap for 24 local authorities was officially launched on Oct 21 this year. Its action plan will be implemented in phases, beginning with Padawan Municipal Council and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, to support efforts in localising SDG practices and strengthening community-based sustainability initiatives. He reiterated that Sarawak remains committed to advancing sustainable development, ensuring that economic progress is balanced with environmental stewardship and social inclusivity.
